Where are we in terms of scientific advancement, 69 years from independence? This question was the basis for a recent workshop where at stake were questions relating to the tangible outcomes of investments in Science and Technology (S&T) beyond mere publication, as true of India as of other nations around the world, authoritarian regimes to democracies. In such a context, this workshop was aimed at understanding the impact of S&T on Indian society in the years after independence from a historical perspective, with a view to enabling relevant stakeholders to make appropriate recommendations for future policies.Full Text

At the recent 10th Young Investigator’s Meeting 2018 (YIM-2018), the last day of which fell on International Womens’ Day, i.e. 8 March 2018, one of the talks was about sensitization regarding gender diversity in the workplace. This was triggered in part by comments made during the break-out discussions that revealed that many well-meaning people may not be comfortable with dealing with women in the professional workspace. Since they do not know how to deal with women trainees/colleagues, they have interactions that are difficult for both sides, and often end up excluding or alienating women. Some accomplished scientists at top-tier institutions have been known to say that women students ‘start crying for everything’ and women postdocs ‘come only for breeding and child-rearing’.Full Text

India is estimated to have a large number of patients suffering from rare diseases (RDs). More than 95% of such diseases are incurable. In many cases, the available treatments are expensive and often have to be provided lifelong to the patients. As a result, the direct and indirect costs of these diseases are significantly high, adding to the country’s socio-economic burden. It is time for India to implement healthcare policies that are focused on encouraging domestic production of drugs against RDs and finding innovative cures for them. This article delineates the existing social, economic and policy scenario governing RDs in India.It also examines someof the global policy approaches in this field. Taking a cue from such international practices, this article advocates the need for a comprehensive regulatoryframework for RDs in India with the ultimate goal of ensuring ‘cure for all patients’.Keywords
